Dr. Mona Fekry – Pioneer of Suzuki Piano Teaching in Egypt

Dr. Mona Fekry is an Egyptian pianist, pedagogue, and one of the leading Suzuki teachers in the Middle East. A member of the International Suzuki Association, she established Egypt’s first Suzuki Piano Class in 1997, laying the foundation for what later grew into the Cairo Suzuki Music Center, the country’s first dedicated Suzuki program for young musicians.

She studied at the Cairo Conservatory under Noémie Mélikian—a student of the legendary pianist Alfred Cortot, founder of the École Normale de Musique in Paris—and under renowned Egyptian pianist Marcelle Matta. Although she initially pursued medicine and practiced for three years, she ultimately left the medical field to dedicate herself fully to music and teaching.

Her introduction to the Suzuki Method came through her sons, Georges and Samuel Mohsen, who studied violin with Dr. Osman El Mahdy at the Cairo Opera House. Deeply moved by the philosophy of Shinichi Suzuki, Dr. Fikry and her husband, Dr. Mohsen Edward, became strong advocates for the method in Egypt. They attended international Suzuki conferences, and Dr. Edward translated Suzuki’s seminal book Nurtured by Love into Arabic, making it accessible to more teachers and families.

Expansion to Violin Education with Georges & Samuel Mohsen

In 2007, the Cairo Suzuki Music Center expanded its program with the opening of the violin class, led by Georges and Samuel Mohsen. Their addition marked a new chapter for the school, bringing the same Suzuki philosophy of learning through encouragement, repetition, and community to the world of strings. This expansion not only enriched the center’s offerings but also established it as the leading hub for both Suzuki piano and violin education in Egypt.

For over three decades, Dr. Mona Fikry has specialized in teaching young children, starting from the age of four, nurturing generations of pianists through the Suzuki philosophy of talent education. Her work has had a lasting impact on piano teaching in Egypt, inspiring both students and fellow educators.
